About the Event

The Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF) held the third episode of its 2026 Webinar Series, “Listening with Empathy: Communication Skills for Clinicians & Patients/Parents”, on Friday, 2 October 2026 (19:00–20:30 EEST) on Zoom Webinar.

The webinar brought together healthcare professionals and patient representatives to explore the importance of empathetic communication in the management of thalassaemia, sickle cell disease and other haemoglobin disorders. The session focused on active listening, building trust, addressing communication challenges and fostering compassionate, patient-centred care, with particular emphasis on ensuring that patients and families feel heard, understood and actively involved in decisions affecting their health.

Moderated by Mr Frank Somma, the webinar featured three presentations:

  • Dr Farrukh Shah (UK): The Foundations of Empathetic Communication – exploring the essential principles of empathy, active listening and effective patient–clinician relationships.
  • Dr Sujit Sheth (USA): Listening in Practice: The Clinician’s Perspective – highlighting practical approaches to improving communication and strengthening trust in clinical settings.
  • Mr Photis Eliades (Cyprus): What It Means to Feel Heard – sharing the patient perspective on the importance of understanding, respect and meaningful communication throughout the care journey.

The presentations were followed by an interactive question-and-answer session, allowing participants to engage with the speakers and explore practical ways to improve communication in everyday healthcare interactions.

The webinar reinforced TIF’s commitment to promoting patient empowerment, shared decision-making and stronger partnerships between patients, families and healthcare professionals, recognising effective communication as an essential component of quality healthcare.
